Dr. Juan Garro receives the distinguished Civic Medal in his hometown of Cañete, Peru for his accomplishments in medicine and his humanitarian work throughout the world.
Cañete-born Juan Garro, M.D., regarded as one of the top doctors in the field of Otolaryngology in the United States, has been given the disitinction of Son of Cañete. This world-reknowned Otolaryngologist born in San Vicente de
Cañete has helped thousands of people around the world overcome illness and disabilities and achieve a better quality of
life. Through his surgical practice in the United States and his humanitarian work in
various parts of the world, Dr. Garro has been recognized as one of the foremost
physician's in the field of otolaryngology. For his achievements and excellence, the
City of Cañete has recognized him as a Distinguished Son and has awarded him the city's
Civic Medal, an award given to inspirational figures native to the town of Cañete.
The Civic Medal has been awarded to Dr. Garro in recognition of his
life-long contributions to humanity. The Municipal Award Ceremony was hosted by Mayor Maria Montoya on May 3 2011. Upon receiving this distinguished honor, Dr. Garro said, "In my travels I am often
asked where I am from, and I answer with pride that I am from the beautiful village of
Cañete, Peru. I do not get to visit my hometown as often as I like but it is always in
my heart. That is why this award is so important to me. It gives me enormous pride
and pleasure to return to my roots, the town where I spent my youth, and to share this
recognition with the children of Cañete." He went on to explain how he found
inspiration in so many people throughout his life and career and that he would be
extremely honored if this award allowed him to inspire just one child to pursue his
dreams.
After thanking Mayor Montoya, an emotional Dr. Garro received his
civic distinctions and agreed to be of service to the community whenever called upon.
Mayor Montoya had words of praise that paid tribute to the doctor and his body of work.
She declared that with the distinction of the Civic Medal, Dr. Garro will forever serve
as a model for children and young people in Cañete. "Juan Garro has made it very clear
to all of us that excellence is something achievable by each and every child in this
town", stated the Mayor.
Having received his medical degree from San Fernando University Medical School in
Lima,Peru,
Juan J. Garro M.D. completed his residency in Otolaryngology at Washington Hospital
Center, Children's National Medical Center, and Veterans Administration Hospital, all
in Washington D.C., where he practices today. He completed his fellowship in otology
at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
It is estimated that Dr. Garro Spends approximately 20 percent of his time each year in
humanitarian efforts. Countries in which he has served include Czechoslovakia,
Honduras, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, France, San Salvador, Spain and
Ethiopia. Until very recently, he made these trips abroad without the help of any
